This position is responsible for the maintenance of City-owned streetlights, traffic signals and associated communications systems, which includes preventative, routine and emergency maintenance in all weather conditions. This position will also assist Signs and Marking personnel as needed and may assist in emergency snow removal operations.

This position will be filled as a level I or II, depending on the qualifications.

What youll do:

  • Repair, replace, adjust, and troubleshoot basic electrical systems.
  • Respond to trouble calls during and after scheduled work shifts.
  • Maintain City owned streetlights and traffic signals.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier.

  • Traffic Signal Technician I
    • Demonstrated experience with the operation of hand tools used in the construction or mechanical trades is required.
    • Demonstrated experience with the maintenance of vehicles is preferred.
    • IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Certification required within one (1) year of successfully completing the initial hire probationary period.
    • IMSA Level I Traffic Signal Certification required within eighteen (18) months of successfully completing the initial hire probationary period.
  • Traffic Signal Technician II
    • Must have five (5) years of direct experience working in traffic signal systems.
    • IMSA Work Zone or equivalent nationally recognized course is required and IMSA Signal and Street Lighting certification is preferred. Five (5) years of verifiable work experience in the field, may be substituted for IMSA certifications.
    • Graduation from an accredited vocational, military or two-year college with courses in electronics technology is preferred.
    • Two (2) years Leadman experience of planning and running crews preferred.

Entry rate of pay: $21.09 - $25.23 per hour, DOQ
